Any band that labels themselves as doom blues is bound to get my attention for at least a brief moment. A visceral feel and tortured vocals definitely bring Eyehategod to mind, but that's hardly a bad thing. Witchden doesn't make my guts hurt like Eyehategod does, though. Blues heavy riffs that tend to plod along at a hypnotic pace make me feel more inclined to nod along rather than barf on my own shirt or whatever people do at Eyehategod shows. I've been to one, I don't know.

Two of the dudes from Portal (Yeah, that one band that sounds like a swarm of evil bees devouring your brain) are involved in this and it really shows. Every once in awhile those bees make an appearance, which isn't really a bad thing at all. At times it even sounds like some sort of anti-cosmic elephant is trumpeting in the deep and murky pit of their sound.

This album title is impossible to spell correctly on the first try. Try it. You will fail.

This album is a depressing fog of 'doom' that will wash over you and bum you out. Definitely not doom in any sort of the classical sense. More like buttrock slowed down and fuzzed out. Either way, Very Cool.

More 'doom', this time blacky-deathy with lots of weird nerd shit in between the songs. A supremely sinister and Very Cool aural assault. That link is even 320 kbps so you can hear all the nerd shit extra good.

Blessed Offal - Blessed Offal

This EP was horribly overlooked this year. While it isn't groundbreaking (not that anything I listen to ever is) it definitely deserves quite a bit more attention than it's gotten. Basically what I'm trying to say is Blessed Offal put out some Very Cool doom-laden death this year.

Yob released an album this year, so as one would expect here it is. On a list at the end of it. Very cool.

Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand

This album is very cool if you already liked Crowbar. If you didn't it probably didn't convert you. It's very cool because I still remembered it even though it came out in like... February.

Disma - Toward The Megalith

This album is very cool, but you already knew it that because it's literally on every top list that matters. Also, this is a definite contender for most Very Cool artwork of the year.

Corpsessed - The Dagger & The Chalice

This is definitely one of my favorite Very Cool death metal albums of the year. If you don't have it already you're slippin' so hard you already fell on your stupid ass. Idiot.

Rotten Sound - Cursed

Rotten Sound is the only grindcore band I've posted so far. Very Cool.

Concluding the Orange Goblin posting spree we have the split they did with Electric Wizard. The first track, Electric Wizard's seventeen minute Chrono.Naut, is a two-parter kicking things off with some serious business riffing before sliding gently into its spacey conclusion. Orange Goblin follows with two tracks, the first being Nuclear Guru (a mediocre track I don't have feelings for either way), the second being a cover of Black Sabbath's Hand of Doom that's actually pretty awesome. Not a must-have release by any stretch, but still a solid listen.

Torche - In Return (2007)

Torche is one of those bands that I warmed to very, very slowly. While I really like Floor and I love the riffage that Torche brings to the table, for some reason I never really enjoyed them all that much. Until I heard this one. I can't really explain it, but if you enjoy the genre and have written them off maybe you should give this one as listen as well. It truly has the Baizley touch as it were, the mere presence of his artwork seeming to elevate most albums he gets involved with.

Note: For some reason the first song really annoys the shit out of me, so I recommend skipping it. Warship sucks and if you like it you suck. I've considered deleting it all together but my iTunes OCD would keep me up at night if I did.

The initial screeches on this record throw me off every single time I put it on. I absolutely adore Barney's voice. I think it's one of the most burly, beefy, visceral vocal deliveries in aggressive music. But those first squeaky screechy sounds, fuck do they put me off. After the first bar or two he's back to his usual awesomeness though, so don't worry dudes (I know you were worrying about it). What makes Barney so awesome is even when he just goes "Oooo!" or "Guhhhh!" it sounds so fucking brutal it makes my vertebrae rattle. And I don't mean brutal in a breakdowns and flatbill caps kind of way. I mean pulling your intestines out of your mouth and shoving them back up your asshole kind of way. Sure this album came out in 2006. Sure you pretend to love Scum. Who cares. I sure as fuck don't.

Most have probably already heard this, but the fact that Dead Congregation is playing Rites of Darkness III has got me stoked on this band all over again. Finally starting to get to the bottom of the giant mound of .RARs and .ZIPs on my desktop that I've accumulated from the various sources I frequent. Some are pretty shitty. This one, however, was a surprise. I'm going to lie I probably downloaded this at least a month ago and with a name like Year of The Goat, I was expecting something much heavier, but this is just as good.

Sweden continues to kill it as far as rock is concerned, this occult rock EP a shiny gem in genre pretty full of idiots making shitmusic. If you're looking for something a bit more mellow, get into it.

I thought I would post this U.S. Christmas album next. I feel like it displays another side to their sound should the previously posted album (Eat The Low Dogs) be your only foray into USX' insane sound. Salt The Wound starts out as a much more visceral and noisy venture into psychedelia. Violent and almost jarring at times early on, toward the end of the record it settles down to a dull hum.

Sometimes I like to relive the day that this album came out by completely forgetting it even exists for months on end only to find it in my music library later and get really excited. Fastcore's favorite wiggers, and I say that in the most complimentary way possible.

While I'm a huge sucker for the whole bay area fastcore movement, this band is a definite favorite. Might post other albums from them later on. If you're not into the whole smoke weed and A.C.A.B. thing you might not be down with this band. The use of a Trailer Park Boys sample to illustrate their disenchantment when our local law enforcement earns bonus points.

As the weekend buzz finally dulls to a low hum, this is a good album to listen to. Doomy and long winded tracks with a black metal atmosphere. Clean vocals abound, be warned. In fact he does that same creepy nazi-whisper that the dude from Death In June does as well.

In all seriousness, there are definitely a couple tracks with some serious DI6 vibes, The Lodge especially sounds like a lost track that Agalloch found or something.

Revolting - In Grisly Rapture (2011)

I have a love hate relationship with Razorback Records. The I love htem for reviving a sound that was essentially dead when the brutal and tech death sounds were dominating the scene. I hate them for how ridiculous and goofy some of the bands are (I'm looking at you, Witchtanic era Acid Witch). Revolting, however, have been consistently great. If you haven't checked out their last album The Terror Threshold, I highly recommend that you do.

Revolting still have some of that goofy tinge to them, but thankfully it's mostly restricted to lyrical content. A unique guitar tone, interesting riffs, and Rogga's trademark vocals make this a stand out release for me.

And yes, I'm aware this release isn't with Razorback.

Especially by those that aren't into the "brutal" or "technical" branches of the genre. Neither are really my cup of tea (I'm partial to the primitive, retardo, sweatpants area of the death metal scene) I do really enjoy this album as well as several others by Hate Eternal. In fact, I'll be forking over my hard earned monies to see them this summer.

John Lee Hooker - The Boogie Man (2006)

While this particular compilation wasn't released until five years after his death, John Lee Hooker himself lived from 1917 to 2001. Known for his signature 'talking style' blues, Hooker created a sound all his own though very similar to the Delta Style blues. He was one of the more well known blues artists from the late 20th century, though his music was often considered a throwback to a time before time or meter mattered.

I'm sure to your average Hessian this doesn't mean jack shit, so if you like blues or are curious about the genre, check it out.

Huge dumb riffs with huge dumb lyrics about smoking weed. Perfect. While this album lacks any true staying power that would make it a classic of the genre, it's definitely a lot of fun.

Awesome rock album that I don't think they will ever top. While I definitely celebrate the entire catalogue, this is the obvious stand-out that I spin at least once a week.
