Staying within the theme of posting things that aren't relevant to the usual fare on this blog, here are four albums from an artist I have absolutely no fucking idea how to pronounce. Basically, it's the project of some dude named Sean out of Berkley, California that plays spaced out, folky, psychedelic, and generally just weird music. Pretty soothing shit. Also, he only releases his material on cassette tapes.

This is an odd one. I got this in my email today from Trash Talk's label. It's a mixtape of soul songs put together by one of the guys from the band. Strange, but I enjoyed it. Cover art is really misleading.

This is a strange one. If you're a casual Black Flag fan or not a fan of the band at all, you probably haven't heard of this one. It definitely breaks the Black Flag mold and shows how truly genius these guys really were. It's four tracks of really experimental, almost sludgy, punkish and almost progressive sounding stuff. It's also completely instrumental and most of the songs are over five minutes long. If you've never heard it before, check it out. You might be pleasantly surprised.

The Frostland Tapes, a three disc set released in 2008, was the first official release of Darkthrone's first four demos as well as a live recording from 1990. Also included is a (formerly) rare recording from the 1991 Goatlord rehearsal session. As expected, muddy ass production and some of the songs don't even have vocal tracks on them. Fucking awesome stuff though, a must for any and all so called black metal fans.

I'm kind of having a hard time coming up with a good way to describe this band. While it definitely has the general feel of black metal, it has some shoegaze elements as well without sounding cheesey or as lame as you'd think a black metal meets shoegaze hybrid would sound. That description came out as unreadable and idiotic as I thought it would. Just download it and give it a spin, asshole.

As much as I hate to use ridiculous genre modifiers, blackened death metal is what this truly is. The black metal elements bring a melodic touch to things. Enough tremolo picking (as well as other black metal riffs) to make me poop my pants. With song titles like "For Those Who Stayed Satanic" how can you go wrong?

via their Last.fm: "Meaning bandname: Maquiladoras (or as we write: Makiladoras) are free-trade zones in Mexico. ‘Free’ means free to exploit, the workers in this kind of places don’t have any rights. At the Drive In made a song about the Maquiladoras and especially about the many women that were murdered when they were traveling to their job."
Awesome Dutch crust band.

So this has been sitting in my uploads folder for quite some time. Don't know why I never posted it. Slow, heavy, and slightly psychedelic metal. Get waste and jam it real slow.

Goofy black metal legends have finally returned. Haven't been able to listen to all of it yet, but from what I can gather not much has changed between 2002 and 2009. If you like their past work, grab it. The title track is on the above linked myspace if you're on the fence about it. I would like to note that I am disappointed in how entirely not retarded the album cover is. Wish I had the cash to pre-order the LP. You can grab it for around $25 over at Nuclear Blast's webstore. Kind of expensive.
Edit: Apparently I need to work on cloaking my shit better.

Easily my favorite record from these punk-fueled grindcore/death metal dudes. They effortlessly blend the dynamics of both grind and death metal in a way that really blows my mind. An absolute must have for anyone that claims to enjoy aggressive music. Don't act like you ain't know.

I'm pretty sure most are familiar with these guys. But if you aren't the produce a blend of spastic, experimental hardcore with a grindy bent to it. This is their latest effort, released in 2007, and they are really starting to expand and fill out their sound adding in some slower doomy, sludgy riffs that really compliment the faster parts. I think I enjoy this record the most as a whole, the eleven tracks clocking in around 24 minutes. My only qualm is the album really comes to a climax during Book Of Bot and the two following songs seem a bit tacked on. One of their best, I'll post up more later.

Hardcore/Powerviolence band featuring members of Spazz, Our Turn, and Look Back And Laugh. A super-group, if you will. The 7" is six rippin' tracks that you would expect from these dudes and two really, really fuckin' heavy instrumentals that you wouldn't expect but I definitely enjoy. Awesome record, I really can't stop listening to it.

This album has a close place to my heart. Specifically because I listened to it for the first time when I was fourteen years old and hated it. A lot. A few years later I gave it another listen and actually enjoyed it. Essentially they were a short lived German thrash/hardcore band that didn't put out all that much material. Decent stuff, the most notable track being 'Emo Kids Blown To Shit'.

In an interview with Tony Rettman of Blastitude, Pissed Jeans’ singer described their sound and intent with the following: “The idea was to start a different kinda punk band focused on dead ended carnal cravings, sexual depression…that sort of thing. Mainly we just wanted to bludgeon the listener with dull, monotonous droning rock music that just sucks the energy out of you, the musical equivalent to watching a toilet flush.”
Pretty perfect description if I do say so myself.

Floor (member(s) of which went on to form Torche) is one of the few sludge bands that really stands out in a genre that tends to sound more or less the same. The somewhat melodic vocals and the fact that despite the fact they play sludge, which is definitely known for its ten minute epics, they generally keep their tracks beneath the four or five minute mark making them much easier to digest. How thoughtful. A must have album for any sludge metal fans. Quick side note, I'm working on tracking down a lot of the EPs these guys put out, so check back for those.

Haunting to say the least. Mostly instrumental, mostly awesome. Composed by Nick Cave and his long time Bad Seeds partner in crime Warren Ellis for the western film The Proposition. The music is just as bleak as the barren western landscape, whispered vocals making a few brief but appreciated appearances.
